Rubber Roof Installation – Torch Down

Rubber roof installation is a common practice for all flat roofs. There are three types of roofing systems to choose from. These are EPDM Rubber, TPO Vinyl, and Modified Bitumen Torch Down Rubber Membrane.

We have been repairing and installing Flat Roofs for over 25 years and serving Fairfield County, Connecticut.

To make roof repairs on small residential roofs like balconies or small overhangs is very challenging. Most of the time there is not enough space for more than two people to move around. Then you need to have room for tools. The other factor is there are more elements to deal with related railing posts, door sills vent pipes. All this combined with a small roof makes it harder to work or make roof repairs than a larger roof.

It will take much longer to do a small flat roof than a larger flat roof due to all the elements mentioned above. Many times the siding is a significant factor too. The flashing that is attached to the siding has to be removed or replaced.

We removed the railing and had to fix the sill flashing on the door. This flat roof was challenging because the door leading out to it was too low to the roof.

Rubber Roof installation and Torch Down- Installing a rubber roof on a small balcony roof is harder than doing a regular flat roof.
There are more elements to contend with when dealing with a balcony roof than a regular flat roof.

When we prepared this small flat roof, we had to contend with the railings and also a door sill that was too low to the roof surface. When a door sill is that low, there is no place to install flashing.

The water could just run under the sill and cause a leak into the house. That is what happened to this particular roof before we did it. Most roofers are not qualified or do not have the experience to deal with problems like this. We cut the door sill to slide the rubber membrane under it.

Rubber roof installation flashing - Hard to work in narrow confined areas as in this balcony roof.

After preparing the balcony roof, we then installed the base paper and then the Modified Bitumen Rubber Roof. We managed to cut away under the door sill and made some flashing to work with the situation.

Repairing roofs like these are challenging. Watch this video on another door sill we had to install flashing. You can tell by the workmanship that the previous roofers had no idea what they were doing.
